In a dark field, a pair of reflected eyes can feel like a message from the landscape. This case study follows the making of Tapetum Lucidum — Night Survey 17, a visual experiment in which code alone turns that brief glint into a living, watchful presence. No photographic eyeshine supplies the effect; the image is built from light, geometry, and careful control of what remains hidden.

For readers drawn to education, science, and reference, the project offers a useful way to think about seeing as a process rather than a snapshot. The eye’s reflective layer becomes both subject and method: a prompt to explore how illumination returns, how a small signal can carry a strong impression, and how technical constraints can shape an image’s meaning.
The field notes trace the work from its guiding idea through the construction choices that make the effect reproducible. They invite a closer look at the boundary between retina and film, observation and invention. Yet the most striking part may be the one that appears simplest: the tiny shift that makes a coded reflection seem to look back. The full case study shows where that shift begins.
